Certification and Testing

Corps members must take and pass a subject-specific exam called The PRAXIS II Series: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers before entering the classroom. Corps members cannot be placed in a Charlotte-Mecklenburg teaching position without passing scores on their PRAXIS II exam. Applicants assigned to Charlotte will receive further information about exams once they are accepted.

Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all corps members must work toward certification during their two-year commitments. Corps members are required to complete six credit hours during the first year of teaching to be eligible to teach a second year. Due to our partnership with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), corps members enroll in university-level courses to work toward their initial teacher licensure or a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Corps members receive a plan of study from the university that enables them to be fully licensed or have a master's degree in teaching if they decide to pursue additional coursework. In addition, after meeting certain residency requirements, all licensure courses at UNCC are available at no cost to the corps members.
