Corps Year: 2008 |
Describe where you live. What is your neighborhood like?
I'm living in a beautiful historic Victorian house in the West End of Hartford with five other '08 corps members. The neighborhood is a mixed bag of single-family homes and other old houses subdivided into apartments. The neighborhood is definitely undergoing a renewal. Two of the houses on our street have been completely redone since we've moved in. The best part is that I live walking distance from my bank, pharmacy, school, church, and Elizabeth Park.
What do you like most about living in Connecticut?
Not to gush, but I am enamored with this state already! Connecticut is beautiful. It's so green during the summer and the weather is warm without being hot. Plus, I love all the history here. How many other people get to work at a school founded in 1638 and walk past Mark Twain's house to get there?
Do you find that you can live comfortably here on your teacher's salary?
It's sufficient right now. It'll be better once I've been through a couple of paychecks and paid off some outstanding bills from the summer.
What was the most difficult part of your transition to Connecticut and how did you overcome it?
I think just the physical distance was the hardest thing. I moved to Connecticut from Houston with all of my stuff. It ended up being about 30 hours in a rental truck with my car being towed in the back. I stored everything from my old apartment in a storage building in Connecticut over the summer. The move involved doing a lot of comparison shopping on shipping needs and figuring out logistics like when do I need to leave Houston to get to induction on time. I advise future corps members to save as much money as you can before you move because moving anywhere can be costly.
